About Ms. Hayward
Welcome! I am so excited to be your child’s teacher this year! This is my 18th year teaching here at Watkins, and my 19th year of teaching overall. In addition to my own classroom responsibilities, I also serve as our Youth Development Lead and mentor new teachers. In the past I have also served as an instructional lead and a Newport News Pre-K Model Classroom. I’m looking forward to working with you and your child this year. On a personal level, here are some things to know about me:
- I graduated from James Madison University and also have a Master’s of Education with a focus in Early Literacy Development.
- I minored in music and love to sing and play instruments.
- I grew up in New Jersey.
- I have a puppy named Bailey that your child will probably hear a lot about!
- I LOVE to read, and hope to encourage your child to do the same!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me!
Classroom Goals and Expectations
Our overall goal for this year is to help prepare your child for Kindergarten. We will work on many skills this year. Some of these skills include letter recognition and sounds, rhyming, beginning writing, shapes, colors, counting, beginning reading skills, and many more. Perhaps more important than the academic skills, we will also help your child develop social skills, recognize and handle their emotions, and develop independence and self-help skills that will be used for the rest of their lives.
To help your child accomplish this goal and to get the most out of the school year, we maintain certain student and parent expectations. We expect that our students will give us their best efforts during class activities, make positive learning choices in the classroom, and be supportive of their other classmates. We expect that our parents will work with their child at home, attend parent conferences/workshops, and encourage their child to be the best that they can be. We also expect that parents will check the nametag daily for parent notices and return anything that needs to come back promptly. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!
